Proudly Present
the 8th Annual Health Activist Award
to
Fior Cruz
2005 recipient for her work in self-healing
Statement by Fior Cruz
We have all been lied to, and those lies have made us and
the planet sick. We are living with different kinds of
diseases and we can not escape seeing and feeling each
others pains and suffering. Common sense demands of us
to get involved and participate in the Struggle to help
bring peace, justice, equality and healing to our fellow
sentient beings. Many of us have been active for most of
our life in the movement for Black power and liberation
but we failed to see the connection in relation to what
we do and put into our bodies and now we are paying a price.
Twelve years ago, when I had a physical manifestation of
my dis-ease, I instinctively knew that I wanted to heal
not only this body, but the pain in my heart and soul.
This was the only choice that was compatible with my spirit
and my belief, that the health care system in this country
is more interested in making a profit than in healing or
curing any illness.
It has been a heart opening journey and a sincere search
for the truth. Today I am and feel free in body, mind and
spirit. I am free because I know that our bodies have the
capabilities to heal themselves, and that when I am still
I can perceive the infinite and the creative force of the
universe.
I have found myself, I am alive and I am still
curious about myself, what a joy! Another source of joy
and strength for me are our ancestors and the fact that
in spite of slavery, racism, hatred and exploitation we
are still here. Not only are we here but in this crazy
time in history we continue to be original and creative
and persist in being a happy and loving people. Our ancestors
showed us a way to survive thru struggle and faith. We
love and have faith in our people, we continue with determination
fighting for peace, justice and equality because we know
without a doubt that victory is certain.
Statement by Dr. Mutulu Shakur
Dr. Jewel Pookrum teaches us that we have limited our
own ability to heal ourselves, or we do not accept the
unlimited power of the brain. We, as humans, have not developed
our capacity to use the seven stages of the brain. Those
of us who understand this deep in our souls have witnessed
the power of internal strength. We recognize that faith,
discipline, and the active use of self-determining control
of our lives provide predictable results.
We honor Sister Fior Cruz today because she has provided
the type of example that is consistent with the principles
of our award--principles built on the belief that health
care is a human right. When corporations such as Monsanto
(which produces genetically inferior grains contrary to
nature that only produce for one year) partners up with
other corporations, they under develop the land, exploiting
vast areas in the world to produce products (not nourishment
for the indigenous or common people) but to satisfy capitalist
markets. Then in a deceptive show of beneficence these
producers distribute these artificial grains as aid, creating
a monopoly market of its own product. Human rights are
relegated to a side show.
Here in Brooklyn, Harlem, and every other metropolitan
area which is populated by Blacks, Latinos, Asians, and
the poor we are still not able to receive reliable health
care. Even many alternative healing methods are priced
outside the accessibility of the masses.
We have to continue Natural Time and Food Understanding-principles
initiated by Lincoln Detox, BAAANA, and First World Acupuncture-so
the people learn to heal themselves. Those of us who know
must teach reliance on our own intuitiveness.
For example, just the other day, here in the US Penitentiary
in Atlanta, Georgia, a female guard died. She happened
to be one of the most jovial, pleasant, and spirited adversaries
we have here. For a long period, she suffered hair loss
and muscle aches. For many reasons, she attributed her
ailments to her nerves and to the stress from the job and
relationships. In our various conversations I indicated
to her that she may have some kind of kidney contradiction.
Her family doctor diagnosed her as having muscle pains
and continually prescribed pain killers. Just last week,
another opinion indicated she has had bone cancer for some
time. Once she received this new diagnosis she gave up
her will to live and died within a week.
This very common occurrence indicates that we as a human
community have ceased to rely upon the relevant healing
stages which dwell within the structure of the brain. A
combination of brain development, nutrition, and physical
regimen will provide a free path to healing for the present
and coming generations. There’s a place for pioneering
scientists in the improvement of quality of life for mankind.
However, is there a place in this capitalist driven health
care system for their contributions to benefit the toiling
masses? We must maintain self-determination in the healing
of our bodies.
Much respect to you, Sister Fior, because you embody the
principles that we speak of. May our young learn from your
example.
